In all cases Holder's identity document photo or scan

Identity card or passport, the page with the photo.

In Switzerland Registration certificate photo or scan

The Swiss registration certificate, grey. One photo is enough: the holder and the vehicle are shown together.

Abroad Registration certificate photo or scan

The document from the country of registration: Zulassungsbescheinigung Teil I in Germany, carte grise in France, carta di circolazione in Italy. Photograph all sides that contain data.

Not yet registered Invoice or purchase contract photo or scan

The document must contain the chassis number (VIN) and your name: this proves to the manufacturer that the vehicle is yours. Garage invoice, sales contract or order form.

Everything is submitted online when you place your order. Your documents are encrypted upon receipt and stored outside the public website. First order? See the four-step process.

Who issues the BMW certificate of conformity (COC)

BMW belongs to the BMW Group group, like BMW Motorrad, Mini, Alpina, Rolls-Royce.

Only the manufacturer can issue this document: no intermediary can produce or correct it. Our role is to prepare the file, handle the process and follow your order through to delivery.

The BMW certificate of conformity (COC) is generally available for vehicles first registered from 1996 onwards.

On this site, BMW is listed under "Passenger cars" (EU vehicle category M1). See all brands: Passenger cars.

The most common BMW models in Switzerland

The certificate of conformity (COC) is ordered vehicle by vehicle, from the chassis number. These are the BMW models most often registered in Switzerland, from most to least common:

  • BMW X1
  • BMW X3
  • BMW X5
  • BMW 320d
  • BMW 118i
  • BMW 120d
  • BMW 218d
  • BMW X4
  • BMW 530d
  • BMW 520d
  • BMW Z4
  • BMW M135i
  • BMW 116i
  • BMW 320i

Ranking based on vehicles in circulation (SwissCarInfo data). Your model is not listed? The order works the same way: the chassis number is what counts.

Recognising a BMW chassis number

The first three characters of the chassis number (VIN) identify the manufacturer: this is the WMI code. 27 prefixes are assigned to BMW in our database:

  • 3MF
  • 3MW
  • 4US
  • 5UE
  • 5UM
  • 5UR
  • 5UX
  • 5YM
  • ABM
  • DAB
  • MHH
  • MMF
  • PAF
  • PM1
  • WB1
  • WB6
  • WBA
  • WBE
  • WBG
  • WBM
  • WBS
  • WBV
  • WBX
  • WBY
  • WZ1
  • X4X
  • ZAL

If your number starts with one of these prefixes, our check recognises the brand automatically. A different prefix does not mean the vehicle is excluded: some models are built by another manufacturer of the group. Check my chassis number.

Frequently asked questions about the BMW COC

How much does the BMW certificate of conformity (COC) cost?

The BMW COC costs CHF 220, a fixed price shown before payment. Delivery is charged separately and depends on the destination.

How long does it take to receive the BMW COC?

Allow 9 to 15 working days from the complete file. This is the manufacturer's lead time, plus postal delivery.

Which documents are needed to order?

The 17-character chassis number and, depending on your situation: holder's identity document, registration certificate, invoice or purchase contract. Everything is uploaded online when ordering.

Is the certificate an original?

Yes. The document is issued by BMW and we forward the original to you. We produce neither copies nor reconstructions.

Can I order the COC for a BMW X1, X3 or X5?

Yes. The order works the same way for every BMW model: the manufacturer checks the vehicle from its chassis number. If the manufacturer refuses to issue the certificate, we return its tariff to you if it returns it to us, together with the delivery charges; the handling fee remains due (article 10 of our general terms and conditions).

BMW van, motorcycle or truck: which page should I choose?

Each range has its own page, with its own price and lead time: BMW Motorrad. The certificate of conformity (COC) is ordered on the page that matches your vehicle.

My BMW is already registered in Switzerland: can I order its COC?

Yes. The order first asks where the vehicle is registered today, and the Swiss vehicle registration document then serves as the vehicle document. No COC is required to sell the vehicle in Switzerland: it is mainly needed when the vehicle leaves for another country.

My BMW is older: can I still get its COC?

The BMW certificate of conformity (COC) generally exists for vehicles first registered from 1996. For ten years after manufacture, the manufacturer must issue a duplicate on request; after that it decides, and the order checks the year.

My BMW was built for the American market: is there a COC?

As a rule, no: a vehicle without a European specification, for example one intended for the American or Japanese market, has no European COC. It then goes through an in-depth technical examination at the motor vehicle office. If in doubt, write to us with the chassis number before ordering.
